Public Notice Regarding Private Firework Show on 9/19/26

The City has received numerous calls and emails regarding a private fireworks display that occurred this past Saturday evening. The display took place from approximately 11:00 to 11:20 p.m. and was part of a one-time private event held in Grant. The City understands that off-duty Washington County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Mahtomedi Fire Department were present to supervise and ensure the safety of the event.

The resident hosting the event obtained a fireworks display permit from the Mahtomedi Fire Department and a licensed operator conducted the display. Late last week, the City was informed that the fireworks were scheduled to begin at 11:00 p.m. The Mahtomedi Fire Department contacted the City to discuss concerns about the late start time. The City clarified to the Fire Department that the event did not have a noise variance. While the City recommended that the fireworks occur prior to 10:00 p.m. to reduce impacts on neighboring properties, the City does not currently have provisions in City Code regarding special events or fireworks displays and therefore has no meaningful enforcement authority in this situation. The City did not have any knowledge of the level of noise the fireworks would create.
